This is a general talk for students. It starts from the current computer sciences development to career development. Based on the his personal experience, the speaker will discuss issues in how to identify research topics, how to conduct research, and how to conduct impactful research. He also will address how to develop a successful career in general.

Dr. Xian-He Sunreceived his B.S. in Mathematics from the Beijing Normal University in 1982, and his Master in Mathematics and Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1985 and 1990, respectively, from Michigan State University. He is a University Distinguished Professor of Computer Science of the Department of Computer Science at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). He is the director of the Scalable Computing Software laboratory at IIT and a guest faculty in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at the Argonne National Laboratory. Before joining IIT, he worked at DoE Ames National Laboratory, at ICASE, NASA Langley Research Center, at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, and was an ASEE fellow at Navy Research Laboratories. Dr. Sun is an IEEE fellow and is known for his memory-bounded speedup model, also called Sun-Ni’s Law, for scalable computing. His research interests include data-intensive high performance computing, memory and I/O systems, software system for big data applications, and performance evaluation and optimization. He has over 200 publications and 5 patents in these areas. He is a former IEEE CS distinguished speaker, a former vice chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing, the past chair of the Computer Science Department at IIT, and is serving and served on the editorial board of most of the leading professional journals in the field of parallel processing. Dr. Sun is a member of the Overseas Expert Advisory Committee of the State Council Overseas Chinese Affairs Office (國(guó)務(wù)院僑辦海外專(zhuān)家咨詢(xún)委員會(huì)委員), an overseas member of the 8-th Congress of China Association for Science and Technology （中國(guó)科協(xié)八大特邀代表）, and a member of the China Thousand Talent Plan (short term) (國(guó)家千人計(jì)劃（短期）入選者). 翁巨揚(yáng)教授

報(bào)告題目：人腦計(jì)算模型和未來(lái)人工智能產(chǎn)業(yè)

報(bào)告內(nèi)容：上世紀(jì)90年代中葉，人工智能的兩大學(xué)派——符號(hào)主義學(xué)派和連接主義學(xué)派——有過(guò)激烈的辯論，哪個(gè)學(xué)派的方法更優(yōu)越。但對(duì)好些局限特定的任務(wù)，兩個(gè)學(xué)派的方法并無(wú)明顯差別。這個(gè)辯論的主要局限性在于當(dāng)時(shí)研究者們還沒(méi)有認(rèn)識(shí)到人腦的一系列重要性質(zhì)。2001年初，翁巨揚(yáng)和六位科學(xué)家在《Science》上共同提出了自主心智發(fā)育的新方向，并提出了任務(wù)不確定學(xué)習(xí)的新概念，即從嬰孩到成年任務(wù)開(kāi)放的機(jī)器學(xué)習(xí)。近二十五年過(guò)去了，一系列的科研進(jìn)展迎來(lái)了第一個(gè)整腦發(fā)育學(xué)習(xí)的計(jì)算模型，稱(chēng)為GENISAMA 通用圖靈機(jī)?？s寫(xiě)詞GENISAMA的意思是：接地性（Grounded）、涌現(xiàn)性(Emergent)、自然性(Natural)、增量性(Incremental)、關(guān)注性(Attentive)、動(dòng)機(jī)性(Motivated)和抽象性(Abstractive)。因?yàn)橥ㄓ脠D靈機(jī)是現(xiàn)代通用計(jì)算機(jī)的理論模型， GENISAMA 通用圖靈機(jī)使機(jī)器全自主通用學(xué)習(xí)成為了可能。GENISAMA LLC是開(kāi)發(fā)機(jī)器全自主學(xué)習(xí)產(chǎn)品的一個(gè)創(chuàng)業(yè)公司。為了普及腦模型理論和技術(shù)，翁巨揚(yáng)發(fā)起了2016人工智能機(jī)器學(xué)習(xí)競(jìng)賽：http://www.brain-mind-insititute.org/. 這個(gè)演講導(dǎo)引性地介紹這些最新進(jìn)展。"

報(bào)告人介紹：翁巨揚(yáng)教授1982年1月在復(fù)旦大學(xué)計(jì)算機(jī)科學(xué)與工程系獲得學(xué)士學(xué)位；1985年5月在美國(guó)伊利諾斯大學(xué)獲計(jì)算機(jī)科學(xué)碩士學(xué)位；1989年1月在美國(guó)伊利諾斯大學(xué)獲計(jì)算機(jī)科學(xué)博士學(xué)位; 1984年8月至1988年12月，在美國(guó)伊利諾斯大學(xué)實(shí)驗(yàn)室任研究助理；1989年1月至1990年9月，在加拿大蒙特利爾計(jì)算機(jī)研究所和蒙特利大學(xué)任研究員；1990年10月至1992年8月在美國(guó)伊利諾斯大學(xué)研究所做訪(fǎng)問(wèn)助理研究教授；1992年8月至1998年6月在美國(guó)密歇根州立大學(xué)計(jì)算機(jī)科學(xué)與工程系任助理教授；2000年8月至2000年12月在美國(guó)麻省理工學(xué)院媒體實(shí)驗(yàn)室做訪(fǎng)問(wèn)副教授；1998年7月至現(xiàn)在在美國(guó)密歇根州立大學(xué)計(jì)算機(jī)科學(xué)與工程系工作，2003年7月任該校教授，同年12月至2014年3月被聘為復(fù)旦大學(xué)特聘講座教授，2007年被教育部批準(zhǔn)為長(zhǎng)江(講座)教授。2006年8月至2007年5月在美國(guó)麻省理工學(xué)院腦和認(rèn)知科學(xué)系做訪(fǎng)問(wèn)教授。
